Transitioning to the Cloud Best Practices

The following was taken from a recent technology roundtable discussion that we participated in. This post takes the opportunity to expand on that exchange.

Transitioning your technologies and workflows to the cloud is rarely a straightforward process and is best done through a strategy customized specifically for your business. There are, however, several frameworks and best practices you can follow to help guide you through the process.

AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF)

There is an emerging framework referred to as the Cloud Adoption Framework. While not specific to any particular cloud vendor, AWS has its own documentation for its particular version, called the AWS CAF, for short. Learn more about CAF.

CAF highlights perspectives to take into account, from both business and technical perspectives, with guidance on how to formulate an action plan. That planning can act as a blueprint to inform you on your journey to the cloud.

The framework focuses on a hybrid and incremental process that begins with targeting the right solutions and applications. Look for opportunities to transition where you have a clear advantage for increased collaboration and efficiency in your business. Then measure your migration process by improvements in security, timing, and efficiency.

AWS Well-Architected Framework

We can also point to the AWS Well-Architected Framework as a guide for architecting your infrastructure and solutions.

Five pillars comprise the Well-Architected Framework:

  1. Operational Excellence
  2. Security
  3. Reliability
  4. Performance Efficiency
  5. Cost Optimization

Each of the pillars can be broken down into their own design best practices. We highly encourage reviewing this framework in general, as there are many principles you can broadly apply across existing architecture as well as planning for the future, regardless of cloud migration plans.

Using these tools, along with good planning and communicating objectives across boundaries will help produce effective results that will make transitioning to the cloud as easy as possible.
