FileMaker 12 Tips and Tutorials

In this video series, FileMaker expert Martha Zink takes you under the hood of FileMaker Pro 12, showing you new tools and features along with tips and techniques.

Interface – Starting from Scratch

April 10, 2012 – This video shows how easy it is to use Filemaker, right out of the box, with an existing data set from a spreadsheet. The highlight in FileMaker 12 is the ability to use themes, which make a solution look organized and sleek.

Interface – Object States (Fields)

April 10, 2012 – This video will explain the states available for fields in FileMaker Pro 12 — normal, in focus, hover, and pressed. By leveraging this new user interface, we can build solutions that are user friendly and intuitive.

Interface – Object States (Buttons)

April 11, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink discusses how to use object states for buttons and how they can be conveniently used on multiple layouts, as well as in list views for selecting records.

Interface – Guides and Grids

April 23, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink discusses a few of the new FileMaker 12 features in Layout mode: Dynamic guides, [manual] guides, and the grid. She also mentions the new way in which Layout mode handles object selection, where any object touched while drag-selecting will be selected, instead of only selecting objects that are fully surrounded (like in previous versions of FileMaker).

Interface – Screen Stencils and Explicit Layout Width

April 24, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink shows you how to use the screen stencils as well as the importance of the explicit layout width in Filemaker Pro 12.

Merge Symbols

April 24, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink describes the way that merge symbols can be used in FileMaker 12. Do you have any suggestions on how you’ll use the new Get functions/Merge symbols on layouts? Let us know!

ExecuteSQL — Main Menu Portal

June 27, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink shows one way to take advantage of the ExecuteSQL function in FileMaker 12. By using the Virtual List Technique along with the ExecuteSQL function, a Main Menu layout can show dynamic buttons based on a unique list of categories in a table.

“Conditional” Hover State

June 29, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink shows how to take advantage of the fact that Conditional Formatting trumps the Hover State in FileMaker Pro 12.

Container Field Interaction

June 29, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink shows the way a user can interact with a Container Field in FileMaker 12. The container fields, in this example, are demonstrated as a Help System for an Expense Report database. Imagine being able to follow along with a help video, which potentially avoids the need for heavy written documentation. Martha will show developers the proper setting to allow users to interact with PDFs, movies, etc.

Container Field Storage

June 29, 2012 – In this video, Martha Zink shows the new ability to store data externally in FileMaker 12. Not only does FileMaker handle the folder structure and the links to the files, but it also transfers files to an external structure for existing, embedded container fields.

She has developed in FileMaker since 2004 and has spoken at the FileMaker Developer Conference as well as multiple FileMaker roadshows.
