Join Soliant Consulting at FileMaker DevCon 2013!

Soliant Consulting is pleased to announce that two of our team members will present at FileMaker Developer Conference this year.

This year’s conference theme is “Platform for Innovation.” Topics discussed at the conference include FileMaker core basics, design, development, integration, the web, iOS, and business.

If you’d like to meet with us at the conference, look for a team member in a Soliant shirt or direct message us through Twitter or Facebook and we can set up a time to meet up with you.

Soliant team members Kristy Lapidus and Dawn Heady will lead the following sessions:

FTS: Scripting

  • Presenter: Kristy Lapidus
  • Date: Tuesday, August 13th at 9:00 AM

Session Description: Scripting is a major artery in any FileMaker system due largely to the fact that it allows you to automate laborious and time-consuming manual processes. Despite the plethora of possible processes worthy of automation there are common design patterns – sequences or arrangements of script steps – that serve as the building blocks for script after script. Examples of these design patterns include interacting with the user, finding data, error trapping, navigating to related records, and looping over a set of records. By focusing on the common patterns, you will learn the building blocks necessary for creating scripts in your own database solutions.
Note: A Gold Pass is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).

What You Will Learn

  • Discover patterns in scripting
  • Write scripts that make use of modal dialogs, loop through data sets, and output data
  • Use the script debugger and data viewer to troubleshoot scripts
  • Set up layout and object level script triggers as well as attach scripts to buttons

Be a Consultant Not Just a Developer

  • Presenter: Kristy Lapidus
  • Date: Tuesday, August 13th at 2:00 PM

Session Description: When a user or client comes to you with a problem to solve do you immediately begin coding? If it’s a quick fix like adding a new layout or a new report, why not? However, if the request is more involved than that, you should consider implementing a process methodology that includes a foundation phase. In this session, you will learn about the meaning, purpose, benefits, components, and deliverables of a foundation phase and acquire skills to help increase the likelihood of successful on-budget projects while decreasing risks.

What You Will Learn

  • The importance and meaning of a foundation phase
  • Five things every developer needs to know about crafting a successful foundation phase
  • Discover foundation phase deliverables
  • Build a wireframe in balsamiq

Architecting for FileMaker Go

  • Presenter: Dawn Heady
  • Date: Wednesday, August 14th at 2:00 PM

Session Description: FileMaker Go 12 is a full-fledged FileMaker client and can generally run any FileMaker Pro 12 database. Nevertheless, you can greatly improve your users’ experience by designing work-flows that you optimize for the touch interface. During this session we’ll delve into design considerations for optimizing performance and usability of systems refined for FileMaker Go. We’ll explore the four basic architectural models for FileMaker Go solutions and how to determining which to deploy. We’ll look at the four methods for deploying a FileMaker file to the iOS device and weigh the merits of each. Finally, we will discuss sync strategies when it is necessary to move data between FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go. The solution will include a fully unlocked demonstration file.

What You Will Learn

  • Questions to ask when designing for FileMaker Go
  • Four architectural models for FileMaker Go solutions
  • Four methods for deploying a FileMaker database to the iOS device
  • Sync strategies for moving data between FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go solutions

FTS: FileMaker Go

  • Presenter: Dawn Heady
  • Date: Thursday, August 15th at 9:00 AM

Session Description: FileMaker Go 12 for iPhone and FileMaker Go 12 for iPad are free apps that allow you to turn your database into a mobile app. This is a beginner level session that starts with an introduction to FileMaker Go 12 and how it differs from FileMaker Pro. We’ll work with the control styles built into FileMaker Go and special features available for capturing container field data. We will design layouts specific for the touch interface. Finally we will look at some useful scripts and reporting options when using FileMaker Go.

Note: A Gold Pass is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).

What You Will Learn

  • FileMaker Go 12 and how it differs from FileMaker Pro
  • Using FileMaker Go
  • Designing layouts for the mobile user
  • Useful scripts and reporting in FileMaker Go
