1. By default, Flex Builder opens a Start Page in Flex Development Perspective (click for larger image). More on Perspectives in a moment. The Start Page has links to high quality instructions, samples, tutorials, and help files. If you are new to Flex, don’t overlook the resources mentioned on the Start Page; some point to local resources bundled with Flex Builder, and some point to Web resources like the Adobe Flex 2 Component Viewer.

2. If you have used an Eclipse-based IDE (Integrated Development Environment), Flex Builder will look familiar. Flex Builder relies heavily on Perspectives, which are predefined arrangements of task panes. A Perspective provides a set of functionality aimed at accomplishing a specific type of task or working with specific types of resources.

3. A number of useful Perspectives are provided for you, and you can change them to suit your own needs by changing or resizing the panes in a Perspective.

4. In the Flex Builder Preferences, there are a number of settings that pertain to Perspectives, including which one is set as the default Perspective.

5. At any time, you may view a list of recently used Perspectives by clicking the » symbol (right-pointing double-angle quotation mark) in the upper right corner.
